What to see

  • Gragnano Trebbiense

This territory was the theatre of the Trebbia’s Battle in 218 BC and, later on, it was inhabited by the Romans, as testified by some archaeological finds.
  • Borgonovo Val Tidone

The fortress is in Piazza Garibaldi: it is an imposing, rectangular brick building, with two square towers, surrounded by a wide moat. It was built in the early 13th century, but its present look dates back to the 14th-15th century.
In Via Cavallotti there is the Romanesque Collegiate Church of St Maria Assunta, erected in the early 13th century and restored between the late 14th century and the early 15th century in the Lombard-Gothic style.

  • Momeliano

Located between the hills it has buildings of great historical value, first of all the Momeliano Castle, the church dedicated to Sant'Eustorgio, and the Tower.
  • Travo

This village has been inhabited since the Neolithic period and further on occupied by the Romans. Here S. Antonino, a converted Roman soldier now Saint patron of Piacenza, was martyrised.
The Anguissola Castle, of medieval origins, now hosts the Archaeological Museum.
  • Bobbio

The most important touristic destination of the whole valley, it is famous for the flow of tourists attracted by the river. The symbol of the town is the Old Bridge, also called Hunchback Bridge, of Roman origins and an unmistakable irregular profile that stands on eleven arches, a result of the fury of the river waters or, as the tradition tells, due to the devil who built it in one night.
The historical centre unwinds through steep and narrow paved streets that follow the typical scheme of medieval cities, going past old houses and noble villas. The history of this town, which was strategically built as checkpoint on the Salt Road that linked Piacenza and Rome via the Trebbia Valley, is closely related to that of St. Columba. Founded in 614 AD by the Irish monk, the Bobbio monastery hosts the Museum of the Abbey, which among its priceless findings still preserves an ivory casket from the 6th century. Last but not least, the Malaspina Castle built at the beginning of the 14th century is worth a visit.
  • Romagnese

Romagnese hosts the Alpine Botanical Garden of Pietra Corva on the slopes of Monte Pietra di Corvo. The garden is open from April to September and it is home of many plant species.
  • Zavattarello

The small village, situated in the Tidone valley, is part of a circuit of the most beautiful village in Italy and it is dominated by the castle of Zavattarello. It lives mainly on agriculture (grapes and apples) and tourism (summer residences, farm tourism).
