Itinerary 5

This itinerary goes through the major pedestrian streets: Corso Vittorio Emanuele – one of the most favorite area for shopping and the Pubblico Passeggio, also called Faxhall - ideal for long walks or jogging among ancient plane trees. In the surrounding area, there is Stradone Farnese, nowadays an important street open to traffic, that leads downtown.

  • Corso Vittorio Emanuele

    Corso Vittorio Emanuele

    From piazza Cavalli towards north-south, stands corso Vittorio Emanuele, one of the most important pedestrian street, everyday crowed of people, thanks to the presence of several banks, bars, shops and cinemas. At the second traffic light, on the left side, Via verdi leads to Antica Osteria del teatro,a one star Michelin restaurant,located in a Medieval building. A little further, the beautiful building palazzo Malvicini Fontana. In via Nova and in via S. Siro stand the buidings Zanardi, palazzo Guilieri.

    Stradone Farnese

    On the east side of corso Vittorio Emanuele, begins Stradone Farnese, more than one km long. Here it is possible to admire S.Chiara Church –dating back the XIII° century – rebuilt in the XVIII century, decorated with frescoes and plasters. Beautiful its wooden crucifix dated XV century. At the corner with Via Giordani stands the Church of S. Agostino, that rose at the middle of the XV century on the area of the Benedectine monastery of S. Caterina. It’s a monumental construction of five naves (the only one in Piacenza), closed to worship two centuries ago.
  • Pubblico Passeggio

    Pubblico Passeggio

    At the end of Stradone Farnese, on the right side, begins the “Facsal”, a pedestrian path built on the Renaissance walls. At its north side, it is still possible to admire some very interesting views of ancient towers, domes and roofs of the whole historical centre.
    Along this tree-lined path there is the little church of Madonna della Bomba, a playground for children, some rotundas of the bastions.
  • Porta Genova

    Porta Genova

    At the end of Stradone Farnese stands Porta Genova, where it is located the school “Respighi” and the military hospital: on one of its walls there is a gravestone remembering the soldiers who died during the war against the Germans on September 9th 1943. They were the first soldiers to die during the Resistance.
