Towards the sea through Trebbia Valley, beloved by Hemingway

The true star among Piacenza valleys, visited by the famous writer and Nobel Prize Winner Ernest Hemingway during the Second War World in 1945 who described it as "the most beautiful valley in the world". Doubtless picturesque, this valley is narrow and tortuous, locked between steep and wooded cliffs, with significant sheers. Thanks to the total absence of industrial areas, Trebbia is a river with almost zero pollution (its mineral waters are even sold in bottles). Even if it has been abandoned, Trebbia Valley still offers a magnificent vegetation with pure air and marvelous woods.

What to see

  • Rivergaro

A delightful touristic destination that presents a Castle now called Villa Anguissola Scotti. In medieval times it was subject to numerous sieges and restructured at the end of the 18th century, it is characterized by a notable Neoclassic façade with paired columns and a tympanum.
The Parish Church of Sant’Agata boasts a Neoclassic style and the San Rocco oratory built in the 17th century.
  • Travo

This village has been inhabited since the Neolithic period and further on occupied by the Romans. Here S. Antonino, a converted Roman soldier now Saint patron of Piacenza, was martyrised.
The Anguissola Castle, of medieval origins, now hosts the Archaeological Museum.
  • Bettola

Before crossing the bridge over the river Nure, visit the ancient village of San Bernardino, with some 18th-centuy buildings on the right bank of the river.
Its homonymous aisleless church dates back to the 17th century; the interior preserves stuccoes, frescoes by G. B. Galluzzi (1716), works of art by the Bibiena’s School and the coat of arms of the Nicellis, the Colombos, the Cavallis.
Do not cross the bridge, but turn left towards Bramaiano, where you will see the imposing and square Farnese Tower, turned into a private residence; some small balconies and the shrine by the entrance refine its mighty structure. Now cross the bridge to visit the ancient village of San Giovanni, with its wide Piazza Colombo, overlooked by the statue of the navigator by Astorri, inaugurated in 1892, on the occasion of the four-hundredth anniversary of the discovery of America.
Here there is the beautiful Romanesque-Gothic Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Oak, built between 1879 and 1885 on a plan by the engineer Guglielmo della Cella; the bell tower dates back to 1929.
  • Marsaglia/Corte Brugnatella

The town is located in the high Trebbia Valley in the Ligurian Apennines, near the confluence of the rivers Trebbia and Aveto.
The landscape of the Trebbia Valley is neatly cultivated up to altitudes where the forests cover thickly the slopes of the mountains. On the same territory pine forests were planted by man after the war. The river Trebbia, crystalline waters, is one of the few Italian still swimming rivers. Along its course, which attracts many athletes and swimmers each summer, it is possible to practice activities include canoeing, fishing, canoeing and other sports.
The main branch of the river Trebbia si the Aveto torrent. The other branches are on the right bank the Rio Cordarezza and the Rio Curiasca and on the left bank the Rio Villero.
  • Ottone

The Ligurians, the Celts and the Romans inhabited Ottone. According to the legend, Hannibal passed this way in 218 BC.
Piazza Vittoria is the heart of the town: the Malaspina Castle overlooks it. St Marziano’s dates back to the 17th century and keeps remarkable gilt Baroque stuccoes and spiral columns. The ancient parish church of St Bartholomew was built around the year 1000 to shelter the pilgrims: it preserves the Romanesque belfry and has an 18th-century façade.
The Town Hall houses the Sacred Art Museum, which keeps 120 objects (14th-20th century) from the churches of the Upper Trebbia Valley: paintings, pieces of furniture, ancient tomes, silverware, the vestments with the Dorias’ coat of arms and the interesting bronze bell forged in 1355.
