The Lombard Monasteries way of Arda Valley

During VI century, the Lombards reused some tracks of the ancient Roman roads to link the duchy of Tuscia, Spoleto and Benevento with Pavia, their capital. They privileged the Ligurian-Piacenza Appenines to keep away the Byzantine soldiers who were settled on Ligurian seaside. That route gave birth to the so-called "Lombard Monasteries Way" whose steps - used by soldiers, merchants and pilgrims - are shown in this itinerary full of medieval villages and amazing landscapes.

What to see

  • Castell'Arquato

A medieval town of traditional structure which has maintained its appearance as it was in the early 10th century, the Old Town of Castell'Arquato is a high rock which in other times was strategically important for dominating the valley, now surrounded by the village. Its structure has led to appearances in movies such as Ladyhawke.
Castell'Arquato is also in the area of the Colli Piacentini (Piacenza Hills), an important area for wine production. The most important wines produced in the Colli Piacentini are Gutturnio, Bonarda, Ortrugo, Malvasia, and Monterosso Val d'Arda.
  • Vigoleno

A medieval town saved from the invasion of frenetic pace and conlvulsions of the industrial civilisation.
Whoever goes beyond the surrounding walls which protectthe town, leaves behind the arrogance of the world of today; enters into a different dimension, into a scenery thatgives life to visions of other times: a town gathered around its fortified castle looking right down onto the river Stirone passing below, whilst in the middle of the original littlesquare surrounded by crenellated bastions, a fountain continues to repeat its never ending story.
At Vigoleno the centuries have remained enclosed inside a high surrounding wall which dates back to theend of XIV century.
  • Morfasso

Part of the municipality is part of the Monte Moria Provincial Park, an area of nature conservation covered by a thick forest which preserves secular oak trees. The park, which became famous after being the set of telefilm "La Freccia Nera", is the destination, on the 15th of August, for a traditional country festival that brings together thousands of locals in the large clearing.
The Sanctuary of San Francisco is located in the municipality, placed on an high hill surrounded by meadows, and it is a destination for sunday outings for locals and not.
In the village of Sperongia, which is 5 miles from Morfa, you can visit the Museum of the Piacenza Resistance opened on April 25th, 2009. The museum is dedicated to the Piacenza partisans, but also to the people who suffered for 20 long months under the heel of the Nazi-Fascists, paying with deaths, destruction, violence and deportation in the hope of liberation and a better future.
